Ronan Howlett of Middlebury Wins Statewide Spelling Bee

Ronan Howlett bested 33 other students from across Vermont to win the Vermont State Individual Spelling Bee on Wednesday, March 14, 2012. Howlett, a seventh grader from Middlebury Union Middle School, will now compete in the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington D.C. in June, competing against top spellers from every other state in the nation.

The winning word was “qualitative,” which means “of, relating to, or involving quality or kind.”

Meigan Clark, also of Middlebury and last year’s winner, came in second. Summer Bishop of Williston Central School came in third.

In addition to advancing to the national spelling bee, Howlett received a trophy, a tablet donated by Hannaford’s Supermarkets, and an all-expense-paid trip to Washington, D.C., donated FairPoint Communications, Saint Michael's College, Vermont Lake Monsters, Burlington Hyundai Subaru and Hannaford Supermarkets. Elementary and middle school students (through grade 8) under the age of 16 were eligible to participate in this competition. Students from across Vermont who participated in the bee already competed in their regional bees this winter.

Adam Silverman of the Burlington Free Press served as pronouncer for the event. Bob Johnson of the Vermont Principals Association and Linda Wrazen of the Vermont Humanities Council presented the awards.
