DEC to Hold Public Meetings to Solicit Comment on the Draft South Lake Champlain Tactical Basin Plan

A series of public meetings will be held in April to gather comments on the Vermont Agency of Natural Resources’ Draft South Lake Champlain Tactical Basin Plan.

A Draft Water Quality Management Plan, the Southern Lake Champlain Tactical Basin Plan has been developed to protect and restore surface waters in the southern Champlain Basin. The southern Champlain Basin includes the Poultney and Mettowee River watersheds, as well as the East Creek and several other small discrete tributaries that drain directly to southern Lake Champlain, which includes all of the land in Vermont that drains to the lake generally south of Crown Point. The Southern Champlain Basin is characterized by the most ecologically diverse natural communities in the state, and is often referred to as the “banana belt” due to the low elevation and comparatively warm and dry climate of the southern Champlain Valley. The cluster of significant terrestrial and aquatic sites in this largely undeveloped region of the southern Lake Champlain Valley is a hotspot of biodiversity, especially along the lower Poultney River; a state designated Outstanding Resource Water in 1992.

The draft plan has been completed by the agency and many community partners. The plan lays out the current condition of the surface waters and aquatic habitat, problems occurring with water quality and strategies to be taken by the agency and partners to improve water quality.

The public is invited to attend the meetings, hear a presentation on the plan and offer their comments and suggestions. All meetings begin at 6:30 PM, with the exception of the Pawlet meeting which begins at 5:30.

Meetings will take place in the following locations and dates:

• Tuesday, April, 8th, 2014: Pawlet Public Library, 141 School Street, Pawlet, Vermont, 05761

• Tuesday, April, 15th, 2014: Orwell Free Library, 473 Main St, Orwell, VT 05760

Copies of the plan are available on the web at: http://www.anr.state.vt.us/dec/waterq/planning/htm/pl_lowerlakechamplain.htm or by calling Ethan Swift at 802-786-2503.
