Annual Meeting of Emergency Responders Commences Thursday
Emergency responders from all corners of Vermont will come together tomorrow, September 18th, to take part in the state’s annual Emergency Preparedness Conference. The event is presented by the Vermont Department of Public Safety’s Emergency Management & Homeland Security and Fire Safety divisions.
The conference provides responders, planners, town officials, and other professionals training opportunities and a forum in which to build mutual aid relationships.
More than 220 participants from 55 municipalities, 16 state agencies, and 27 private sector or non-profit organizations are registered for the event. Training topics include introduction to urban search and rescue, effective mitigation, fire safety, hazardous materials and rail, and many others. The classes are all designed to enhance local responders’ ability to prepare for, respond to, and recover from disasters.
There will also be a session that will walk communities through the process of qualifying for the state’s Emergency Relief and Assistance Fund. ERAF rules go into place on October 23rd and towns that meet certain criteria will qualify for a larger piece of recovery funds after a disaster. An awards ceremony at noon will recognize exemplary emergency response personnel and volunteers. The 7th annual conference takes place at the Lake Morey Resort in Fairlee.
